1. Samsung Galaxy Grand

Samsung has added another android smartphone to its galaxy family, named as the Samsung Galaxy Grand. Samsung Galaxy Grand is 5-inch android smartphone, typically developed for mid-ranged consumers. The smartphone runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system and boast a graphic processor for playing games and watching high-end videos with clarity. The phone measures 9.6mm in thickness and has an 8-MP camera along with a 2-MP front camera, supporting 720p video calls. The rear camera can work in harmony with LED flash, back illuminated sensor, image stabilization, face detection and auto focus controls. Additionally, the smartphone can record HD videos with the full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080p. You can connect the phone with laptops, PCs and other USB supportive devices with an integrated USB 2.0 port. The smartphone comes with usual feature-set of Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, DLNA support, USB charging in addition to a set of sensors such as an accelerometer, light and proximity sensors, compass, and gyroscopic sensor. Other than conventional features, the smart phone comes with a selection of integrated features as in other Galaxy models, including S Voice, Popup video and Direct Call. As for network connectivity, the phone would connect to fast HSPA+ networks, GPRS, EDGE but no 4G LTE support has been included. Samsung Galaxy Grand operates on Lithium ion 2,100mAh battery for a relatively longer talk time and standby time.

The droid features a dimension of 143.5mm x 76.9mm x 9.6mm that gives it a slimmer appearance and holds the weight of 162gm. Samsung opted for a 5-inch capacitive and multi-touch WVGA display, providing the resolution of 800 x 400p with 16 million colora on-screen. The TFT display has a pixel density of 187 pixels per inch that adds more sharpness and brightness to the display. You can increase the external memory of the device up to 64GB using an unused microSD card slot, while the internal memory of the droid is 8GB along with 1GB of RAM. The smart phone is powered by dual core, 1200Mhz processor for smoother performance with speed. The smartphone is not lacking behind in multimedia features also as it comes with a music player, video playback, radio with an integrated speaker that provides captivating sound outputs. Samsung Galaxy Grand supports GSM connectivity and offers web browsing experience with in-built browser and online services like Youtube videos and Picassa.

Overall Review

So the Phablet market has officially with Sony being another heavyweight company to jump in the "Let's make huge Smartphone's" club. The Sony Xperia ZL offers a huge 5 inch screen and with this Sony has now joined HTC with their Droid and ofcourse the company that started it all, Samsung with Samsung Galaxy Note series. There is access to 4G and 3G technology. Xperia ZL has the dimensions 131.6mm x 69.3mm x 9.8mm and weighs 151 grams whereas the 5 inch screen is shatter proof and is also scratch resistant. The device again comes powered by the Bravia engine 2 that has really boosted the display of the all devices from Sony and has given it a elegant look. The 2GB RAM is very powerful which when combined with Quad-core 1.5GHz Krait processor and the Jelly Bean Android operating system enhances the speed multifolds. Internal memory of 16GB though huge is well cuishioned with a microSD card slot that lets the user expand the memory if required up to 64GB. Camera is more than formidable with a colossal strength of 13 megapixel that works at a whopping resolution of 4128 x 3096 pixels.

Both the devices feature the Android Jelly Bean operating system but the Sony Xperia ZL has a slightly more powerful battery strength as compared to HTC Droid DNA.

LG is showcasing the latest smartphone, LG Optimus 4X HD with the quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. This feature differentiates the handset, along with the fact that a minimal user interface overlay has been used inside so that the power requirements of the device are not very taxing, from other smartphones in the market right now. Yet a 2,150 mAh battery is included inside the handset with the intention that the display and the quad-core processor keeps running all the day long. LG Optimus 4X HD boasts a 4.7 inches touch display with high resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and this high-end smartphone runs the Android version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating platform. This new OS is the apple of eyes for all the Android lovers these days and this gives a cutting edge to the Optimus 4X HD. Overall Review

The LG Optimus 4X HD is the latest quad-core Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone from LG and hosts a 4.7-inch true HD IPS display. It also boasts an 8-megapixel camera, a 2,150mAh battery, 16 GB of internal memory and DLNA support.

The design of LG Optimus 4X HD isn’t that great but with its obvious flaws, it still emerges out as a nice one in build quality and overall looks. The main credit for the popularity and hype that this phone is getting goes to its quad core Tegra 3 processors. The hardware of the phone is ok but its software is quite good. The kind of picture quality one gets on its large screen and the speed that this phone offers even while doing petty things, is really commendable. The absence of a microSD card slot can be a little bit of issue with LG Optimus 4X HD but on the whole, it is a nice smartphone with power and purity both.

User Interface and UI functionality

LG Optimus 4X HD uses a 4.7-inch, wide, true HD IPS display with a toughened glass front on the capacitive screen. IPS displays showcase faithful colors than AMOLED, and provides good contrast and excellent viewing angles.

A quad-core processor is set inside the phone and that marks out this one as a high-end device. LG Optimus 4X HD has a fairly large screen and stand out giving a feel that one is looking at a premium phone. It has dual metal rims running around the perimeter, sandwiching prism detailing and this is LG's new signature design. The textured back, tapered sides gives an illusion that the slim phone is even thinner. The plastic casing is ok but the build quality is firm, so the premium look of the Optimus 4X HD is not compromised at all.

The all new Ice Cream Sandwich interface greets the users when unlock button is pressed. There are direct signs that show that on board OS is Android 4.0 design. Pressing in the centre and dragging in any direction creates a peep-hole until animation can pop and unlock.

The responses of the touchscreen are quick and it picks up even the lightest gestures. The powerful quad-core processor ensures that there is no lag/slowdown while skipping through the home screens and app trays. An array of seven home screens comes with Optmius 4X HD and these can be simply edited with favorite widgets, apps and backgrounds.

Multimedia features

The multimedia highlights of this new LG phone are video zooming and speed regulation only.

Henceforth, watching the full HD video on the LG Optimus 4X HD is a joy, thanks to large true HD IPS screen and the quad-core processor. There is absolutely no lag while videos are playing and there is seamless in and out zooming and panning while it is playing. The rate of video playback can be speeded up and slowed down.

Pictures and Video quality

The 8 megapixels camera isn’t a masterpiece but that is what this new Android smartphone has to offer. This 8 megapixel camera is easy to use with a familiar Android feel to the layout and settings menus. There are plenty of options to tweak your images from effects, to scenes to ISO and brightness adjustments. Shutter speed was pleasantly quick (less than a second) and the auto focus, tap to focus and LED flash allowed us to take pleasing photos of the LG booth.

Video recording is just as easy allowing you to capture full HD (1080p) footage. Having a 1.3-megapixels user-facing camera is a nice addition for a keen video chatter.

Internet support

Internet browsing was smooth and web pages loaded quickly and there was smooth and efficient zooming. The Internet access via Wi Fi is poor Wi-Fi but the text reflow feature is impressive. There occurred no unwanted side-ways scrolling.

Internal and External Memory

The trend of not offering microSD memory card slots with top-end phones is on rise and so is the case with LG Optimus 4X HD. It’s distressing but has become quite a common practice. The on-board internal memory storage of the device is set at 16GB but whether the phone will ship with a slot or not is currently unknown.

Applications and Gaming

LG Optimus 4X HD allows users to convert 2D games into 3D, as long as the handset is plugged into a 3D capable TV. It is a joy to play Angry Birds in 3D on a 50-inch screen and that miracle happens with LG Optimus 4X HD. Some apps, for instance, the camera apps is too slow. The other apps are available from Android Market and work well on the phone.

Battery Backup

Battery life in modern smartphones comes at the price of cutting down the phone’s slimness and that is a risk which few manufacturers can afford to risk. LG Optimus 4X HD uses a 2150 mAh unit, which lasts a solid 2 days. However, battery performance is reliant on how competent both hardware and software of the phone are, so that is the deciding factor in case of Optimus 4X HD also.

Compare

The newly unveiled quad-core phone, HTC One X is also a top-end Android phone running the Android v.4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.  HTC One X and LG Optimus 4X HD both use the Tegra 3 processor and a Cortex A9-based architecture. However, the HTC One X is a chunky handset with 9.3 mm thickness. The HTC One X has an impressive 32GB of internal memory, but has no microSD card slot. In this aspect, it resembles to LG Optimus 4X HD. HTC One X and LG Optimus 4X HD both use 4.7" displays. However, there's lack of wow factor in the design of LG Optimus 4X HD that means it rather shrinks into the background compared to the HTC One X. The primary reason behind this idea is that the back of the phone has a rather simple glossy black plastic with nice crinkly finish. Though, overall general shape and profile of the phone is generic, there are no obvious extra features. However, all this doesn’t imply that it's not a good smartphone.
