Well, now a days we hear people saying that PC trend is dying or it will in the future as most of the people will be using iPads, and once in a while we hear news that old x86-64 is still alive and well.Well I think that saying PC trend is going to end is wrong, as we can clearly see that from the report of CNET, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer has announced that Microsoft has sold 4 million copies of Windows 8 as far, but he didn’t mentioned that if it includes consumer or enterprise updates, software sold to OEMSs or figures from Windows 8′s ARM based counter-part Windows RT.
Well lets do some comparison between marketing of Windows 8 and Apple’s OS X 10.8, which was released in July. Here so far Windows has achieved figure of 4 Million downloads in 4 days, which I think is a lot of downloads and on the other hand Apple’s OS X 10.8 had reached 3 Million downloads in similar time period of 4 days back in July. From the survey we can see that Apple’s OS X has comparatively smaller amount of users than Microsoft’s Windows 8, there is a report by Wikimedia’s estimates which give us a pretty clearer picture, according to the report OS X has currently less than one sixth active users of Windows.
The upgrades of OS X sold for $19.99 which Windows 8 pro sold between $14.99 – $39.99, which is clearly much more cheaper than previous version of Windows, well, this can be a sign of competition between Windows and OS X.
Putting some light on some other things, as Windows 8 launch wasn’t as bigger as expected, this isn’t because trend of Windows is dying. The reason is most of the people are using older version of Windows and they are quite happy with and don’t want to upgrade as Windows XP still holds 2nd place on most OS share web rankings. There are many reasons behind this and one of the main reason is our most of the software run on this platform. Only enthusiastic people upgrade, else are happy with older versions, including me.
